ACHIEVEMENTS

Over 350 women participated in a Step by Step workshop in 2006-2007. Of these, 237 were able to complete a workshop (68%). This is a high rate, since many women are mandated out of our programs because they are discharged, sent to court, sent to another facility or have a conflicting program.

More than 4,000 women have participated in our programming.

Ongoing Collaboration

Ongoing collaborations with area colleges including Buffalo State, Nazareth, Brockport, Roberts Wesleyan and MCC are helping us strengthen our programming and evaluation. We acquire many of our interns from these colleges.

Table 1: Recidivism Rates of NYS Women Compared to Step by Step Participants

Step by Step Study

The Department of Corrections in Albany, New York analyzed the rate of recidivism of women who had participated in Step by Step interventions as compared to women statewide. The results demonstrate after 24 and 36 months, Step by Step’s participants have lower recidivism rates than incarcerated women in New York State (one-third less after 3 years).
